  • Margaret River Cultural Centre set for $8.5 million redevelopment
  • Supported by a $3.05 million investment by Royalties for Regions
The transformation of the Margaret River Cultural Centre into a modern hub for entertainment, arts and regional tourism is a step closer thanks to a $3.05 million investment by the Liberal National Government's Royalties for Regions program.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today announced funding for the redevelopment, which would further position the town as an inviting place to live, visit and invest.

"Margaret River might be known for wine and waves, but it is also becoming increasingly recognised as a centre for arts and culture," Mr Redman said.

The Hub for Entertainment, Arts and Regional Tourism (HEART) project will involve the redevelopment of the 33-year-old Margaret River Cultural Centre and adjoining 37-year-old squash court and basketball facilities.

The Minister said key features of the first stage of the project would include the creation of a multi-purpose performance and convention space, construction of a central foyer, building of a kitchen and expo area, and a full technical and audiovisual equipment fit-out.

"Stage two will involve an auditorium refurbishment including the installation of theatre-style seating for 310 patrons," he said.

"Once the centre is complete, it will have the capacity to hold conferences, performances, exhibitions and events which will attract people into the town.

"This is expected to have flow-on effects to local businesses, helping to strengthen and diversify the region's economy."

Mr Redman said the redevelopment would complement other Royalties for Regions-supported projects that aimed to increase the town's appeal to locals and visitors alike.

"Margaret River is already a popular place to visit, but Royalties for Regions-funded projects like the Margaret River HEART project, the Margaret River Perimeter Road and main street, and the Busselton-Margaret River Regional Airport, along with events like the Gourmet Escape and Margaret River Pro, will make it a world-class tourism destination," he said.
