The story of a legendary dog from Western Australia's Pilbara region will continue in cinemas across Australia this summer, with RED DOG: True Blue, the follow up to the 2011 smash hit Red Dog, opening in Australian cinemas on Boxing Day.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the movie promised to build on the massive box office success of the first Red Dog instalment.

"Red Dog was the tenth highest grossing Australian film, the highest selling Australian DVD, and was recognised nationally by winning the AACTA award for Best Film," Mr Day said.  

"The RED DOG: True Blue film is the prequel to Red Dog, and follows the events leading up to Red Dog's rise from an ordinary dog to Australian legend.  It stars Australian actors Bryan Brown, Levi Miller and John Jarratt with UK actor Jason Isaacs who audiences will recognise from Fury and the Harry Potter films.

"Producer Nelson Woss and his team at Woss Group Film Productions are to be applauded for the films.  Their contribution to WA's screen industry has been significant.  RED DOG: True Blue is a great example of the impact filmmaking can have, with short and long-term benefits for the community and the State.  The film tells a uniquely Western Australian story, showcases the landscapes of the Pilbara to the world and provides opportunities for industry."

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said 2016 had been a terrific year for WA's screen industry with the introduction of the Liberal National Government's Royalties for Regions $16 million Regional Film Fund and the excitement around the release of RED DOG: True Blue.

"2017 is also shaping up to be an exciting year for the screen industry with the planned releases of Jasper Jones, Breath and Ben Elton's Three Summers," Mr Redman said. "Eighty per cent of the filming for RED DOG: True Blue took place in the Pilbara, so it's fitting the world premiere of the film is in Karratha with a free screening for the community this weekend.

"The film will put a spotlight on the Pilbara as a destination by highlighting the spectacular scenery and rich ancient Aboriginal culture."

RED DOG: True Blue is being screened in Karratha, Roebourne, Port Hedland and Perth before its national release on Boxing Day.
