Fireworks, fire dances, multicultural performances and Indian food will all feature in Bunbury's Festival of Lights celebrations this Saturday, November 12.

Organised by the South West Indian Group, Diwali symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair.

Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Mike Nahan said Diwali was a global festival that brought people from all communities together to celebrate diversity.

"For Western Australia's 40,000-strong Indian community, it is a time for family and friends to come together in prayer and celebration marked by fireworks, dance and the sharing of food," Dr Nahan said.

"Diwali is also being celebrated by more and more people from the wider community who are drawn to the festival for its message of harmony and tolerance as well as the excitement of dance displays, music and fireworks.

"The Liberal National Government is proud to support this fantastic family event with funding of $5,000 through the Office of Multicultural Interests' Community Grants Program."

This year's event has a strong multicultural focus and includes Noongar performances with a Bollywood twist.

The festival will feature a duo fire dance performance, classical Indian and fusion Bollywood performances, Spanish and Zumba dancers and presentations from local school groups. Highlights will include the Bunbury City Brass Band, harp and sitar music, and a Noongar art display.

"Diwali is also a time to reflect on the Indian community's long and proud participation in the development of WA," the Minister said. "To everyone in WA's Indian community, I wish you a very happy Diwali."
