  • Liberal National Government provides $200,000 for Age Friendly Communities Grants program in 2016-17
  • Grants to support implementation of age friendly initiatives in local governments
The Liberal National Government today reaffirmed its commitment to creating age friendly communities throughout Western Australia, with the expansion of its successful grants program.

Seniors and Volunteering Minister Paul Miles today announced funding for the Age Friendly Communities Grants program would double to $200,000 in 2016-17.

"The program has been hugely successful with more than $473,000 in funding provided to 70 local governments since 2008 to help with age friendly community planning," Mr Miles said.

"This has resulted in about 75 per cent of seniors now living in a local government area that has received funding and is committed to an age friendly approach.

"Feedback from local governments has indicated support is now needed to help put these plans for age friendly communities into place."

The program has now been spilt into two streams:
•           up to $20,000 to implement and deliver innovative projects linked to age friendly and community engagement plans
•           up to $10,000 for local governments undertaking age friendly planning which have not already received funds through the program.

The projects should be delivered in partnership with other local governments, community, private or non-government organisations.

"With WA's population of seniors growing, looking after the current and future needs of older people is a key priority of the State Government," the Minister said.

Fact File
  • The Age Friendly Communities Grants program is administered by the Department of Local Government and Communities
  • Funded projects align with the State Government's Seniors Strategic Planning Framework 2012-17
  • By 2050, one in four West Australians are expected to be seniors
