  • $1.26 million Lotterywest grant for construction of volunteer hub
  • New facility will serve as a central headquarters for Kings Park volunteers
A dedicated volunteer hub to support hundreds of Kings Park volunteers is on track, thanks to a $1.26 million grant from Lotterywest.

Seniors and Volunteering Minister Tony Simpson said the grant to Friends of Kings Park would support the construction of the purpose-built facility.

"Kings Park has about 600 regular volunteers who make a significant contribution to the park and wider community across a variety of roles," Mr Simpson said.

"A park of this size could not provide quality experiences to visitors without the many hours of labour provided by these volunteers.

"This volunteer hub will not only serve as a central headquarters, but will also facilitate improved volunteer engagement and support extended volunteer programs throughout the park."

The project is a partnership between the Friends of Kings Park, the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority and other volunteer groups such as the Kings Park Guides, Kings Park Volunteer Master Gardeners and the Honour Avenues Group.

When completed, the facility will include a workshop, offices and amenities to meet standards of safety, comfort and wellbeing for all volunteers.

"I commend Friends of Kings Park on the work they are doing on behalf of the community and in support of one of Perth's greatest landmarks," the Minister said.

The Liberal National Government provides more than $1.3 million to support volunteering in Western Australia, including funding to Volunteering WA to build capacity across the sector.

Fact File
  • WA is the only State where money raised from lottery products is distributed directly back to the community to support not-for-profit organisations
  • Since 1993, Friends of Kings Park has received over $12 million in Lotterywest grants
  • In 2015-16, Lotterywest raised $281.41 million to support the WA community
