  • Busselton to host SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia this weekend
  • About 2,500 participants, nearly 70 per cent from interstate and overseas
  • Supported by Liberal National Government through Tourism WA
A bigger and better SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia is set to take place this weekend in Busselton, with the addition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia to the event schedule.

Premier and Tourism Minister Colin Barnett said the event would be a major tourism boost to the region, with about 2,500 competitors and many thousands of spectators expected to visit Busselton.

"About 70 per cent of participants are from interstate or overseas including countries such as Singapore, the United States of America, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Indonesia, Germany and Japan," the Premier said.

"In addition, thousands of spectators are expected to witness all the action as competitors undertake a swim around the iconic Busselton Jetty, a ride through the Tuart Forest National Park and a run along the shores of Geographe Bay.

"Three hundred children are also expected to participate in the IRONKIDS event, scheduled to take place on Saturday along the Busselton foreshore."

IRONMAN Western Australia offers 40 qualifying places to the iconic IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and the 70.3 event offers 30 qualifying spots for the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Tennessee, USA.

Mr Barnett said supporting events, such as the IRONMAN Western Australia, was vital to growing tourism in the State.

"The State Government has a strategy in place to increase the value of tourism, from the current $9.6 billion to $12 billion by 2020," he said.

"Supporting mass participation events such as the IRONMAN will help us achieve our goal.

"Last year alone, IRONMAN Western Australia delivered an economic boost of $10.06 million to the local economy.  It also generates national and international media coverage and is broadcast into many of our key international markets, highlighting the South-West region to a worldwide audience."

The Liberal National Government is proud to support the SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia through Tourism Western Australia.
