Media Release - Locals getting back in the game after fires

4/4/2016

  • $150,000 to redevelop Waroona Town Oval after January bushfires
  • $30,000 in sporting equipment grants to help three local clubs
Residents in the bushfire-affected towns of Waroona and Yarloop will hopefully be back playing sport in time for the winter season, thanks to funding from the State Government.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies today announced $150,000 would be given to the Shire of Waroona to help redevelop Waroona Town Oval and a further $30,000 in equipment subsidies would be shared by the Yarloop Rifle Club, Yarloop Bowling and Recreation Club Inc and the Log Fence Pony Club.

"These towns were severely impacted by bushfires in January and this is one way the Government can help in the recovery process," Ms Davies said.

"Sporting ovals and clubs are often the foundation to help build strong communities and the funds will go towards ensuring essential repairs and replacements are being made as soon as possible.

"We will also be talking to volunteers in the three clubs to establish how they have been impacted by the bushfires and how best to help them replace key equipment to get them up and running again.

"Active communities are strong communities and we believe strong clubs contribute positively to people's physical and mental wellbeing."

The funds for the oval redevelopment have come from the Department of Sport and Recreation's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) under its Emergency Relief Funding provisions ($80,000), the Department of Fire and Emergency Services ($50,000) and the Department of Local Government and Communities ($20,000).

The equipment subsidy funding will be provided through the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Fact File
  • Sport and active recreation clubs in the regions are also invited to apply for the next Club Equipment Scheme round which opens on April 14
  • This gives clubs $500 towards increasing or upgrading shared equipment
  • The CSRFF exemplifies the Government's commitment to the development of sustainable infrastructure for sport and recreation across the State
