  • $6.1 million expansion of residential rehabilitation beds in Perth, South-West, Goldfields, Mid-West and Pilbara
The Liberal National Government today announced the locations of 60 new residential rehabilitation treatment beds as part of the $14.9 million Western Australian Meth Strategy 2016.

Mental Health Minister Andrea Mitchell said contracts had been finalised for the extra 28 beds in metropolitan Perth and 32 beds across the South-West, Goldfields, Mid-West and Pilbara, which would open in January 2017.

"This represents a significant boost in treatment and support for users and their families who want to address methamphetamine use," Ms Mitchell said.

"These additional beds are part of the WA Meth Strategy 2016, which has already delivered a boost to staffing in community alcohol and other drug counselling centres across the State, a dedicated Meth Helpline, a specialist meth outpatient clinic and frontline worker training."

The Minister said the additional beds would ensure continuity of treatment options for people experiencing meth-related harm.

"There is no one-size-fits-all treatment model for treating people with drug and alcohol problems," she said.

"The best outcomes are achieved when the type of treatment matches the specific needs of the individual.

"For some people, that treatment is residential rehabilitation; for others it is early intervention to avoid the need for residential care or rehabilitation within the community with the help of dedicated support services.

"The Liberal National Government is ensuring that the entire spectrum of treatment and prevention options is supported and available across the State."
