Acting Premier and Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the Liberal National Government's successful bid for the two pool matches reinforced Western Australia's growing reputation as a world-class events destination. "The Rugby League World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2017, so securing these two important matches in Perth is a real coup for our State," Mrs Harvey said. "We expect a fantastic atmosphere as rugby league fans and ex-pats get behind the teams, while international media coverage will put Perth firmly on the map for viewers and potential visitors." The State Government's successful Rugby League World Cup bid, through Tourism Western Australia and VenuesWest, builds on WA's growing rugby league presence. The second of two NRL Premiership fixtures was played last weekend at nib Stadium, which is also the venue for Perth's first international rugby league test between Australia and New Zealand on October 15 this year. Last week, the State Government announced it had secured Australia's biggest sporting event - game two of the New South Wales versus Queensland State of Origin series - for the Perth Stadium in 2019. "The completion of the 60,000-seat Perth Stadium in 2018 will open up even more opportunities for international events, and associated visitation and exposure, for our city," the Acting Premier said. "In the recent State Budget, the Liberal National Government committed $30 million towards bringing business, sporting and entertainment events to Western Australia, including a $19 million investment to activate Perth Stadium. "Events are a crucial part of the State Government's strategy to grow WA's tourism industry. In the year ending March 2016, visitors to WA spent $9.3 billion during their stay in the State and we want to see that figure grow to $12 billion by 2020." Fact File

A partnership between the Liberal National Government and the Council on the Ageing, the WA Seniors Awards is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate older West Australians and the organisations which work to address the needs and interests of seniors. "As WA's seniors population continues to grow, their involvement in the wider community provides enormous benefits to the economic and social wellbeing of our State," Seniors and Volunteering Minister Tony Simpson said. "The WA Seniors Awards serves as a reminder of how vital our seniors are as visionaries, role models and champions of awareness and change in modern society. "Nominations from the community are essential because it is the public who know the seniors who are out there doing great things." Last year, Brother Olly Pickett was named the 2015 Juniper WA Senior of the Year for his inspirational work as the driving force behind Wheelchair for Kids. The charity has now made and sent more than 30,000 wheelchairs to children in 80 countries. Nominations are open for six categories in 2016 - Community Service Award, Arts and Culture Award, Group or Organisation Award, Business Award, Age Friendly Community Award and the Deborah Kirwan Media Award. The 2016 Juniper WA Senior of the Year is chosen from among the winners of the Community Service Award and the Arts and Culture Award. The Minister has also encouraged community groups and organisations to apply for funding from the WA Seniors Week Community Grants Program to host events and activities during WA Seniors Week from November 6-13, 2016. Health Minister John Day said the RFDS provided a vital health link for people living in remote areas of Western Australia and the Broome base and two new aircraft would allow it to continue that service. "Transporting more than 9,000 patients a year, the RFDS provides a vital health link for people living in remote areas of WA and the recently opened Broome base and two new aircraft will help it meet growing demand," Mr Day said. "The RFDS is contracted by the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) to provide inter-hospital transfers for regional West Australians; a service which is critical for access to emergency care for rural patients. "Over the past six years, transfers have grown by about five per cent a year and performance targets have improved despite increasing pressures on the service." Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said enhancing the delivery of sustainable services was vital to meet current and future needs of regional communities. "Under this initiative, $8 million will go to the WA Country Health Service supporting ambulance services in Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek," Mr Redman said. "This funding will also allow the St John Ambulance community paramedic program to continue recruiting and training volunteers at 22 centres across regional WA." The Patient Assistance Travel Scheme (PATS) will also receive $32.23 million to meet the treatment needs of eligible patients who need to travel away from home for treatment. Fact File
Perth to host Australia’s biggest sporting event
Friday, 15 July 2016
Premier and Tourism Minister Colin Barnett today announced the Liberal National Government, through Tourism Western Australia, had won the rights to host the second game of the series at the new stadium. "Holding a State of Origin match at our magnificent stadium is a huge coup for WA," he said. "Arguably, Australia's biggest sporting rivalry is the Rugby League State of Origin series between the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. "We are expecting thousands of fans to make the trip west to be at the game and millions more will watch the live television broadcast, which gives us the opportunity to show off our transforming city and world-class new stadium to the rest of Australia." The Premier said State of Origin matches were the most watched sporting events on Australian television, drawing an audience of 3.96 million viewers last year, out-rating popular events such as the AFL Grand Final (3.54 million viewers) and the Melbourne Cup (3.07 million viewers). "The 2019 match will be only the tenth time in State of Origin history that part of the series has been played outside New South Wales or Queensland," he said. "Having Perth Stadium means WA can now host some of the biggest sporting events in the world, which will have an incredible flow-on effect for the State's economy. "For rectangular events such as this, high-quality seats close to the action will be added as part of the customisation of the venue and this will increase the capacity from 60,000 to 65,000 seats. "In a break from tradition, the Perth match will be played on a weekend instead of a Wednesday evening. This will give fans travelling from interstate the chance to spend the weekend in Perth, which will be a massive boost for the economy." When the second State of Origin game was held in Melbourne last year, more than 39,000 people travelled from out of state to watch it. If 20,000 visitors travelled to Perth to watch the 2019 game, it would be worth $15 million to the Western Australian economy. Mr Barnett said events at the new Perth Stadium formed a crucial part of the State Government's strategy to grow the State's tourism industry. The Premier acknowledged Venueswest and VenuesLive - the recently named operator of Perth Stadium - as important partners in the deal with State of Origin. "In the year ending March 2016, visitors to WA spent $9.3 billion during their stay in the State and we want to see that figure grow to $12 billion by 2020," he said. "Events will help us reach that goal which is why in the recent State Budget, we committed $30 million towards bringing business, sporting and entertainment events to WA, including a $19 million investment to activate Perth Stadium." Hi Gardeners,
We're having our usual weekly casual Garden Gathering this Saturday from 1pm to 3pm (I hope the weather improves!), but next weekend, Saturday 23 July, we are calling for all friends and supporters to come and join us in a bit of a working celebration - we're getting 10 new big garden beds installed! We will gather in the garden to line the beds and fill them up with great soil. There's also some work filling the pathways with wood chips, if you're up to it. If you are prepared to accept this challenge then we'd love to see you and your weapons of mass construction:
Once the beds are in and filled, we're having automated, water-wise irrigation installed, all in time for Spring and Summer. Worth celebrating! It's been a big push to get to this point and I want to acknowledge all our sponsors and suppliers on this 'little' project, who are making it all possible: Manjimup Men's Shed Manjimup Pump and Electrical Manjimup Newsagency Manjimup Stockfeeds Complete Botanics Manjimup Farmers Market Shire of Manjimup Department of Local Government and Communities And the volunteers of the Manjimup Community Garden Please invite your friends and family for the celebratory filling of the garden beds. See you in the garden, Local Community Service Organisation urgently needs volunteers to support the transportation of clients to medical appointments in Bunbury, also to deliver Meals on Wheels to housebound community members.

Seniors and Volunteering Minister Tony Simpson said funding of up to $1,000 was available for community organisations and local governments to organise events that recognised the contributions of Western Australian volunteers. "West Australians have a great tradition of volunteering and its value to our State is enormous, estimated at about $39 billion per year in economic, social and cultural value," Mr Simpson said. "The many hours volunteers dedicate to supporting organisations across WA have an immeasurable positive impact for volunteers, their communities and the organisations they help. "The Thank a Volunteer Day Celebration Grants program will enable local communities to acknowledge and celebrate the role of volunteers in their communities." Research commissioned by Volunteering WA in 2015 found that if treated as a sector in its own right, volunteering is WA's largest industry by employment. The Minister said the State Government was committed to supporting volunteers, providing almost $1.3 million in recurrent funding. "This includes more than $650,000 to promote the value of volunteering and $640,000 to Volunteering WA as the peak body to support the sustainability and effectiveness of volunteering," he said.
