Rugby League World Cup to make Perth debut

  • Two Rugby League World Cup matches to be played at nib Stadium in 2017
  • Huge exposure for the State through national and international media coverage
  • Supported by the Liberal National Government through Tourism WA and VenuesWest
Perth will be a Rugby League World Cup host city for the first time when sporting powerhouses England and France, along with two other European qualifiers, descend on nib Stadium for a double-header clash next year.

Acting Premier and Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the Liberal National Government's successful bid for the two pool matches reinforced Western Australia's growing reputation as a world-class events destination.

"The Rugby League World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2017, so securing these two important matches in Perth is a real coup for our State," Mrs Harvey said.

"We expect a fantastic atmosphere as rugby league fans and ex-pats get behind the teams, while international media coverage will put Perth firmly on the map for viewers and potential visitors."

The State Government's successful Rugby League World Cup bid, through Tourism Western Australia and VenuesWest, builds on WA's growing rugby league presence.

The second of two NRL Premiership fixtures was played last weekend at nib Stadium, which is also the venue for Perth's first international rugby league test between Australia and New Zealand on October 15 this year.

Last week, the State Government announced it had secured Australia's biggest sporting event - game two of the New South Wales versus Queensland State of Origin series - for the Perth Stadium in 2019.

"The completion of the 60,000-seat Perth Stadium in 2018 will open up even more opportunities for international events, and associated visitation and exposure, for our city," the Acting Premier said.

"In the recent State Budget, the Liberal National Government committed $30 million towards bringing business, sporting and entertainment events to Western Australia, including a $19 million investment to activate Perth Stadium.

"Events are a crucial part of the State Government's strategy to grow WA's tourism industry. In the year ending March 2016, visitors to WA spent $9.3 billion during their stay in the State and we want to see that figure grow to $12 billion by 2020."

  • Both pool matches will be played as a double-header on Sunday November 12, 2017 at nib Stadium
