Sports sustainability increased through funds

  • Liberal National Government provides $1.3 million to 25 WA sporting groups
  • Money supports and strengthens local sport, helping to keep it sustainable
  • Part of $7.2 million provided in sustainability funding to sport each year
Sports ranging from archery to ice hockey will share in $1.3 million in funding thanks to the Liberal National Government's Organisational Sustainability Program.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the funding helped State Sporting Associations (SSAs) and peak bodies run their business and stay sustainable for their members.

"In Western Australia, we have one of the best sports systems in the world and Organisational Sustainability Program funding helps the peak bodies of each sport deliver their programs," Ms Davies said.

"We have a model where our sports run their own sustainable programs, from building grassroots participation to high performance pathways.  Strong peak bodies mean a strong club system and a diverse Western Australian sports and recreation culture."

In this round, $1,307,000 was funded to 19 State Sporting Associations and six peak bodies.
The funding is for one year and brings the SSAs into the same three-year cycle as larger SSAs. This allows ballistic and bow sports to conduct full governance and structural reviews.

"Through the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Government is committed to working with sport and active recreation organisations to develop and pursue a philosophy of good governance and continuous improvement," the Minister said.

"A strong and sustainable sport system impacts positively on our community life."

Through the Organisational Sustainability Program, the State Government supports 87 State Sporting Associations and 17 peak bodies which receive $7.2 million annually.
