Women's football recognises best and fairest

• More than 220 guests attend annual dinner for WA Women's Football League
• Historic year for women's football with announcement of first AFL team 

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies congratulated those honoured at the WA Women's Football League's (WAWFL) Medal Presentation dinner at the Duxton Hotel on Monday night.

"It was a great honour to speak at the event in recognition of so many talented players, coaches and volunteers," Ms Davies said.

"It's such an exciting time for female football.  Not only has participation increased to 50,000 in Western Australia in the past year, this year the Australian Football League (AFL) finally announced it would hold a women's competition.

"This means the pathway to play football is now complete - with women having the opportunity to play football right from the junior club level, all the way to the elite."

Along with recognising the eight WAWFL players selected as marquee players for next year's National Women's League, the awards' dinner recognised those who had shone on the field during the women's WAWFL season.

Coastal Titans Football Club's Kiara Bowers and Emma King jointly won the WAWFL League Division Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best.

Perth Angels Jennifer Homes was awarded the Reserves Fairest and Best as well as the Reserves Rising Star award.

Jasmin Stewart from Claremont took home the honour of League Rookie of the Year award, and the Lynette Smith Volunteer of the Year award was awarded to Sally Allomes from South Fremantle.  Sally has dedicated more than 10 years to the league and the South Fremantle Women's Football Club.

"I congratulate all of those recognised at the awards and I look forward to an even more exciting year ahead for female football in WA in 2017," the Minister said.
